Hajime and Miyuki accompany Detective Isamu Kenmochi to Kuchinashi village in Okuhida, Gifu Prefecture, after receiving a letter from Shino, a childhood friend who married into the Tatsumi family as the second wife. Shino has received death threats from the "Cursed Warrior" since the death of her husband, Kuranosuke Tatsumi, whose will named his son Seimaru as heir, excluding Ryunosuke from his first wife, Ayako. Following an attack by someone dressed as the samurai Kaneharu, a masked man claiming to be Saburou Akanuma offers to reveal the Cursed Warrior's identity at midnight. He is later found beheaded in a locked room, with Shino stating he claimed to be Seimaru's supposedly stillborn twin. That night, Miyuki is ambushed by a sword-wielding warrior while walking.
