On January 7, the first workday of the new year in Kagai, the Maiko House residents busy themselves with preparations for the start of their duties. Sumire has her hair styled, offers a personal New Year's greeting to Mother, and dons a formal black crested kimono reserved for celebratory events. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Kiyo cooks a special breakfast for this significant occasion. The maiko are required to exercise particular care while consuming the meal, which features spaghetti with meat sauce, croque madame, and kakimochi crackers as the dish of the day.
