Ep. 11: Shunso Recovers His Sight and Artistic Drive After Mei Retrieves His Drawings

Ogai presents Mei’s golden ball gown design for an upcoming formal presentation. Fumi informs Mei that Shunso departed for Tokyo University of the Arts at Ueno Park, carrying her bonito shaving drawer instead of his paintbrush box. At the art classroom, Shunso leads Mei outside to avoid jealous classmates. They are spotted by Shunso’s best friend Taikan Yokoyama, who reminds him of their plan to revolutionize the art world at the exhibition. Taikan leaves in frustration upon realizing Shunso has not yet considered eye surgery. Fearing blindness, Shunso discards his drawings and tells Mei to leave him alone. A remorseful Shunso is shocked when Mei returns with the retrieved drawings. Reminded of his promise to paint her portrait, his eyesight is restored and his ambition rekindled. Mei finds the missing black cat, returning Shunso to the mansion, where it appears on his masterpiece, delighting Ogai.
