Jan 9, 2019During a crimson moon, student Mei Ayazuki joins magician Charlie in a trick that causes her to vanish. She awakens in an unknown park and is escorted to a party at the Rokumeikan, a venue for significant government gatherings. There, she meets men resembling historical figures before reuniting with Charlie, who reveals she has traveled back to the Meiji-era. While attending the event, Mei is saved from police custody by Ougai Mori, who introduces her as his fiancée to protect her from the authorities in this unfamiliar time period.

Jan 16, 2019Mei awakens in Ogai’s mansion, remembering how he used her school uniform as a distraction to bring her there with Shunso. Struggling with amnesia and the cultural shock of the Meiji era, she learns to wear a kimono with Fumi’s help. Ogai and Shunso then take Mei to a sukiyaki restaurant. A flashback reveals Ogai met Shunso a year ago when the artist sketched a black cat, leading Ogai to predict Shunso’s future fame. Back in the present, Ogai asks Mei, a Tamayori who sees spirits, to locate Shunso’s missing black cat from his painting. That night, Mei finds Charlie in a park. He promises to send her back during the next full moon in a month, advises her to enjoy life, and convinces her to create makeshift mops for Fumi before departing to find the cat.

Jan 23, 2019Ogai forces Mei and Shunso to eat anpan with tea and rice, but they fail to lure a missing black cat using smoked tuna. Kyouka persuades Mei to help Yakumo apologize to his childhood ghost friend, Jane, who vanished after revealing her faceless form. Yakumo lost his spirit-sight after injuring his left eye and believes supernatural events on the full moon night are punishment. Ogai assigns Shunso to protect Mei. While Shunso sleeps, envious of Mei’s Tamayori status, Jane startles Mei. A panicked Yakumo and patrolling Gorou enter the room. As a medium, Mei clarifies that Jane sought contact out of heartbreak, not malice, and promises to remain by Yakumo’s side. Ogai escorts a relieved Mei to safety.

Feb 13, 2019Otojirou informs Mei and Kyouka they will serve sake to noblemen at a grand banquet. Mei encounters Yakumo, Shunso, and Ogai, then protects Kyouka from drunk guests as Kyouka attempts to flee. After Tousuke introduces himself, a disguised Charlie magically produces a camel, which Ogai agitates into running loose. Charlie vanishes, leaving the room clean. Gorou arrives as a bodyguard for Fukuzawa Yukichi, who attends to hear Tousuke speak on electricity. Noblemen oppose Tousuke’s risky plan, but Mei argues for its modern benefits. Impressed, Fukuzawa agrees to invest. Later, Ogai reveals to Mei that Otojirou trained her as a geisha and invites her to live in his mansion permanently.

Feb 20, 2019Mei struggles with the choice between staying with Ogai or returning to the present. She helps Shunso locate his missing black cat in a park, where they are pursued by feral pigeons to Shinobazu Pond. Kyouka explains that the dragon goddess Shirayuki escaped his tragic play, Dragon Pond, and manifested as a spirit there. Ogai reminds Mei of her obligation to find the cat. When Gorou attacks Shirayuki, she reveals a monstrous form. Mei dives into the pond to stop the destruction and is rescued by Ogai. Shirayuki returns to Kyouka after an embrace. The next morning, Mei wakes up sore at the mansion, realizing Kyouka's play will be ready next month.

The location is revealed to be Gorou's home, showcasing his superior housekeeping skills. The group prepares dinner together, with Ogai unexpectedly joining them. During the meal, Ogai restricts Mei from consuming Otojirou's sake and Yakumo's pickles. While washing dishes, Gorou recounts a past incident where a ghost possessed his katana after he killed his friend Saotome. Gorou repairs Mei's torn kimono and invites her to join his division as a Tamayori. Mei refuses, stating her belief that spirits possess good hearts. The others become intoxicated and attempt to separate Mei from Gorou. Ogai later expresses shock at Mei's refusal, noting her ability to uplift the unruly group.

Shunso reveals that Mei inspired the story, which reflects Ogai's heartache over leaving his former lover Elise in Germany. After finding a fountain pen near the unfinished work, Mei learns Ogai went into town. Shunso stops her from searching, then spots Ogai by the river. Mei finds him, offers support, and returns the pen while vowing to stay forever. Ogai completes the novel, but Shunso gradually loses his eyesight while struggling with his black cat masterpiece.

Fumi informs Mei that Shunso departed for Tokyo University of the Arts at Ueno Park, carrying her bonito shaving drawer instead of his paintbrush box. At the art classroom, Shunso leads Mei outside to avoid jealous classmates. They are spotted by Shunso’s best friend Taikan Yokoyama, who reminds him of their plan to revolutionize the art world at the exhibition. Taikan leaves in frustration upon realizing Shunso has not yet considered eye surgery. Fearing blindness, Shunso discards his drawings and tells Mei to leave him alone. A remorseful Shunso is shocked when Mei returns with the retrieved drawings. Reminded of his promise to paint her portrait, his eyesight is restored and his ambition rekindled. Mei finds the missing black cat, returning Shunso to the mansion, where it appears on his masterpiece, delighting Ogai.

After trying on a golden ball gown and waltzing with Ogai before Shunso and Fumi, Mei attends the Rokumeikan ball on the strawberry full moon night wearing her school uniform. She dances with Yakumo, Tousuke, Otojirou, Kyōka, and Gorou. Shunso asks her to stay, but she bids Ogai farewell at their meeting park after a mutual confession. Charlie returns Mei to the present, allowing her to socialize with classmates while Otojirou, Kyouka, Gorou, Yakumo, and Tousuke invite Ogai and Shunso for a meal.
