Conan and Kogoro search for the missing year in Kouri-cho involving amnesiac Ritsuo Esaka. Esaka reconnects with locals and nearly recovers his memory after a dog he dislikes barks at him. Two days later, the detectives visit Esaka's home expecting positive results. Instead, they discover that Esaka has been found dead, ending their investigation into his past.
