Conan learns that shogi player Nishikido was murdered, leaving a damaged board at the scene. He discusses the case with the Detective Boys until Hideyoshi Haneda appears, recounting a strange move Nishikido made. Hideyoshi denies a date with Yumi, claiming he has an important meeting. Suspicious of his behavior, Yumi follows him with Conan, who notes they are less noticeable together. They observe Hideyoshi buying donuts and chatting with women Mizuna Katsumata and Shoko Uryu. Professional player Kosuke Hishinuma joins them, and they proceed to the apartment of participant Yasuaki Genda, where Genda is found dead next to another shogi board with a missing leg.
