Conan, Ran, and Kogoro ride a mountain bus with driver Mamoru Kajita and guide Touko Natsume. Takurou Yabe, president of the Kagekura youth club, is already aboard. Souchiki Okumura forces Kogoro from his seat, argues with Yabe, drinks from his water bottle, and dies of poison. Conan identifies a tiny hole in the bottle and declares murder. Yabe is blamed, causing a brawl that Ran stops. Mayor Takehiko Funaki clears Yabe and offers Kogoro one million yen to solve the case, but no one cooperates. That night, Conan follows inn hostess Kinu Komai to a memorial. At the shrine, Mayor Funaki is stabbed to death while bumping into Ran.
