Jiroo Kuroki asks Kogoro Mouri to assist Shizusan Hayakawa, an artist suffering from depression because he can no longer draw due to age. During a fishing trip, Hayakawa’s maid discovers his body hanging from bamboo. Conan investigates and realizes Kuroki is the killer. He tranquilizes Kogoro to expose the truth: Kuroki drugged Hayakawa with sleeping pills, took him to a bamboo forest, and tied a noose around his neck. Kuroki then cut down surrounding bamboo so the specific stalk would receive more sunlight and grow rapidly, lifting the victim until he hanged himself. Kuroki confesses that he committed the crime because his sensei refused to let him sell paintings under his own name.
