Richard visits Stefan Van Croven, who suspects his wife Daiselle of infidelity. At the villa, he meets student Jonathan Tradonio, editor Foster Drake, and researcher Shamus O'Halliwell. A snowstorm traps everyone, and Richard encounters Stefan dressed as a vampire before retiring. At midnight, the group finds Stefan dead on a cross with a stolen stake through his heart. Richard examines the body since authorities cannot arrive. Daiselle admits to an affair with Shamus, making them prime suspects. Richard and Conan discover no footprints in the snow on the connecting corridor. With the study door locked, the murder appears impossible to solve.
