The group engages in a game of old maid where the loser faces a penalty, prompting Ryoko to speculate about a potential romantic connection between Yuki and Kyon. Following the game, Yuki and Kyon travel to a nearby observatory to stargaze, while Ryoko and Haruhi follow them. Haruhi confesses her feelings of loneliness as she observes Yuki growing closer to Kyon. Eventually, all four characters join together at the observatory, where Yuki is able to hold Kyon's hand. However, the pleasant outing concludes with a sudden tragedy shortly after their return home, as Yuki is struck by a car.
