Hinata intervenes to rescue Naruto, who is on the verge of being controlled by Nagato's Chakra receivers. During a desperate and losing battle against Pain, she finally admits her romantic feelings for him. Although she anticipates her own death, she remains resolute until she is swiftly defeated and appears to be stabbed by Pain. As Pain articulates his philosophy that grief over lost loved ones perpetuates global hatred and prevents peace, Naruto loses control and the Nine-Tails chakra begins to emerge. Concurrently, the ninja of Konoha initiate a search operation for Nagato.
