Following rejection by a group of students, Naruto dresses as a spirit to frighten them. Iruka scolds him for the prank, prompting Naruto to angrily declare he will never return to the Academy and flee a confused instructor. The students then deceive Naruto into entering the forest to retrieve a souvenir from a recent battle. They falsely promise to accept him into their group if he succeeds, secretly hoping that an enemy still lurking in the area will kill him. This event occurs during the Locus of Konoha arc.
