Kakashi arrives in Amegakure to deliver a message to Hanzou, only to discover the leader is dead and Konan is in disguise. She informs Pain about the joint Chunin Exams hosted by Suna and Konoha, prompting him to send genin teams. Tsunade accepts the invitation but orders Shizune to monitor the Ame participants closely. In Takigakure, Shibuki allows Fuu to join the exams with a warning to be cautious. Meanwhile, Gaara tells Kankurou he intends to supervise the exams and reconcile with rebels. Back in Konohagakure, Tsunade asks jounin to recommend their students. Asuma nominates his team minus Shikamaru. Ino asks Sakura to join to complete her squad, but Sakura initially refuses, fearing her non-combat skills will hinder Ino and Chouji. After realizing her own capabilities, Sakura agrees to participate. As Naruto advances in his training, genin from other villages enter Konohagakure, marking the official start of the Chunin Exams.
