Shikamaru, Soku, and Roh arrive at the Land of Silence and attempt to disguise themselves for the heavily guarded checkpoint, but Soku’s determination ruins their initial plan. They visit Sai’s last known location, an inn, where Shikamaru plays shogi with a villager to gather intelligence. Soku becomes disillusioned with how shinobi are treated as disposable pawns and vents her frustration to a busboy named Komori, considering defecting from Konoha. This tension strains her relationship with Shikamaru and Roh. Soku proceeds to the checkpoint to prove her worth, discovering Komori is part of Gengo’s unit who wanted to test her skills. She appears to kill Shikamaru and Roh to pass the checkpoint, but they were merely in a fake death trance. After knocking out Komori, Soku reunites with them to guide them into Gengo’s fort, Tobari.
