Hidan accidentally destroys one of Kakuzu's hearts by stabbing himself, as Shikamaru had coated his spear in Kakashi's retrieved blood. Shikamaru traps Hidan with his Shadow Possession Jutsu, though the Akatsuki member slowly advances. Kakuzu temporarily regains function when his masked beasts return, with one sacrificing itself to serve as a new heart. Just as Kakuzu prepares to finish the group with a Fire-Wind Jutsu, Team Kakashi arrives to intervene. Naruto and Yamato use a Wind-Water Jutsu combo to stop the attack. Naruto apologizes for being late as the group prepares to battle Kakuzu.
