Yamanami recalls observing Hijikata’s practice and requests a transfer to bookkeeper duties to avoid further bloodshed, remembering his past assassination of a Shinsengumi commander during their time as ronin. Tetsu delivers a package to Hijikata, who informs Okita that it contains medicine for physical vigor. When a patrol group is reported attacked by ronin at a riverbank, Hijikata and Okita investigate. Yamanami and Saitou follow, witnessing Furube summon a giant warrior demon to assault Hijikata. Saitou intervenes, causing Furube to retreat, and reveals his expertise in esoteric incantations to explain the situation.
