Tetsu and Tatsu visit a marketplace, where Tetsu sneaks into a sword shop and clashes with a white-haired boy named Suzu Kitamura over a short sword. Their commotion irritates a customer, forcing Tatsu to apologize repeatedly before both boys leave. Meanwhile, Hijikata expresses frustration that a martial arts competition occurred during his leave, prompting Kondou to recount the history of the Shinsengumi's establishment. Suzu, serving as a page for Yoshida, receives advice about focusing on his identity rather than his future self. Tetsu desperately requests a sword, but Hijikata refuses. Okita’s conversation with Hijikata implies he received his own blade at age nine, a decision viewed as a regrettable error. Elsewhere, Susumu evades three female ronin by leaping from a bridge into a riverbank.
