Ep. 13: Schmelman’s Star System Forces Students to Steal or Face Expulsion

Schmelman instructs students that accumulating ten stars grants immediate military entry, while losing them results in expulsion. Stars are obtained through tasks or theft, a system Murdoch and Hina identify as the origin of Star Stakes. Rihito receives no stars and must steal one to avoid expulsion. Licht claims indifference, focusing only on convincing his brother Sakai Tokikaze to return home. Doan steals stars from lockers, threatening Sakai’s malnourished grandmother, who is his landlord’s tenant. To prevent expulsion, students share their stars, leaving Sakai with none. He refuses to leave due to food benefits for soldiers’ families. Murdoch gives Sakai his remaining star and threatens Doan outside the gate. Schmelman interrupts, revealing Rihito pickpocketed Doan’s stars, leaving him with only two. Schmelman rewards Murdoch’s loyalty with two stars. Rihito keeps two stars and decides to stay, planning to send food rations to Sakai’s grandmother.
