Ep. 9: Ash and friends encounter a controversial Pokémon school and its strict leader Giselle.
While gathering firewood in foggy woods, Ash and Pikachu witness students from Pokémon Technical Institute bullying a classmate named Joe. This institution allows trainers to enter the Pokémon League without collecting badges, and Joe claims the harsh treatment prepares him for graduation. Disapproving of this method, Ash demands to meet the program's leader, Giselle. Brock and Ash are attracted to her, but Misty challenges her instead. Giselle’s Rock-type Graveler defeats Misty’s Water-type Starmie, demonstrating that type matchups are not the sole determinant of battle outcomes. Ash then challenges Giselle, pitting Pikachu against her Cubone. Since Cubone resists Electric-type attacks, Pikachu faces a difficult battle. The group also questions the nature of the school and its familiarity to Jessie and James.
