Ash and Professor Kukui observe that Kukui’s Rockruff vanishes nightly, returning injured. They track the Pokémon to a hidden training ground where it battles other creatures. Ash chooses to assist Rockruff in its regimen, helping it master the Rock Throw move. During a subsequent encounter, Rockruff successfully defeats a Magmar that had previously bested it. Impressed by this progress and the bond formed, Professor Kukui decides to transfer custody of Rockruff to Ash, entrusting the young trainer with its care and future development.
