Sara cries after Ralph leaves for India, then wakes to a winter view before her maid Mariette helps her prepare. Lavinia Herbert fears trouble with the Headmistress due to her roommates Jessie and Gertrude. At breakfast, Ermengarde St. John makes a clumsy error that earns her a scolding. In the Headmistress's office, the cat Cesar greets Sara as she learns the Seminary rules and receives a French textbook. Lavinia shows Sara to her seat, where classmates are astonished by her size. The Headmistress introduces Sara and describes her voyage. Lavinia then introduces the other students and recounts the Headmistress's past behavior, shocking the educator and sparking her vendetta against Sara.
