During a church visit, Lavinia prioritizes the students' attire over their spiritual growth and treats Lottie harshly. Sara notices Lottie hiding from the Headmistress's severe reaction, suspecting underlying issues. The Headmistress determines Lottie's fate regarding her return to the Seminary. Lottie throws a tantrum that tests even Amelia's patience. When Lottie strikes her head, Sara discovers she has no memory of her mother. This revelation causes Sara to become deeply attached to Lottie.
