Sara adjusts to Seminary life while remaining unaware of the Headmistress's hostility. Ermengarde St. John struggles in French class despite Sara's assistance, prompting Lavinia to lead Jessie and Gertrude in mocking her afterward. Sara intervenes to stop the harassment, leading Ermengarde to confess her lack of self-confidence as the two become close friends. They wish to visit Aunt Eliza, but require the Headmistress's permission to leave the Seminary. Amelia expresses sympathy for Ermengarde's situation and instructs Sara to return before dusk, a deadline Sara subsequently forgets. Upon visiting Aunt Eliza, Sara and Ermengarde return to find the Headmistress enraged.
