Ronja spends three days searching the forest for Birk without success, while Mattis remains bedridden and refuses food, leaving the Mattis Robbers restless and their raids suspended. Feeling lonely and unable to endure Mattis’s silence, Ronja discovers Birk on the fourth day. He reveals he is leaving Borka's Keep due to his parents' nagging and plans to live in the forest. Ronja proposes they move into the Bear's Cave, her father’s childhood summer residence. That night, she sneaks out of the castle with supplies, bids farewell to the guards, and meets Birk at the cave to begin their new life together.
