Ronja and Birk wake up cold in their cave at dawn, beginning their day together. Birk plans to retrieve his crossbow for safety, prompting Ronja to craft a bow using his knife. They gather supplies in the forest but return to find Gray Dwarfs inside. The pair scream to drive the intruders away, discovering that one loaf of bread has been eaten, which reduces their food reserves. Ronja suggests they can replenish their needs from the forest. Later, she successfully completes her bow. As night falls, Ronja wonders if her family misses her, specifically doubting that Mattis cares after he disowned her. However, she dreams of Mattis weeping a lake of tears over her absence.
