The Mattis and Borka gangs confront each other at Hell's Gap. Mattis presents the injured Birk to Borka, demanding the gang leave the castle by summer's end. When Borka refuses to leave Birk in a dungeon for months, Ronja jumps to the opposing side to secure her friend's immediate release. Shocked by this betrayal, Mattis agrees to the exchange but denies having a child. Lovis counters that she has a daughter and Mattis has lost his mind. During the swap, Birk calls Ronja his sister, revealing their bond. Borka and Undis are furious about the friendship, causing Birk to fight them and leave a crying Ronja. Meanwhile, Mattis falls into a catatonic state, refusing food or speech.
