In 1629, daimyō Tokugawa Tadanaga organizes a samurai tournament using real steel swords, despite strong objections from his advisor. The event begins with an unexpected match between one-armed Gennosuke Fujiki and the blind, crippled Seigen Irako. A flashback to 1622 reveals Irako traveling to the Kogan style dojo in Kagegawa to challenge the master. Before facing the master, he must defeat two apprentices, starting with Gennosuke Fujiki, during which Irako damages his opponent's fingers. This earlier conflict sets the stage for the subsequent tournament held seven years later at Sunpu Castle.
