The group searches for evidence regarding Keiichi’s death, initially suspecting Yutaka Tamaru for leaving before the storm. Kyon and Haruhi find nothing outside, but Haruhi forms a flawed theory inside a cave. After returning to the villa, she abandons the investigation. Itsuki shares an alternative explanation with Kyon, who hides it from the others. The crime is revealed to be a hoax designed to create excitement. Haruhi details how she identified the deception. As the group departs, Itsuki reveals the scheme was intended to keep Haruhi’s mind occupied and free from troubling thoughts.
