Students improve their shooting and flying skills before enduring rigorous ground fighting lessons. Following exhausting training, they relax by swimming in a nearby lake. Claire and Kal-El separate from the group to share a romantic moment in the forest. Kal-El reflects on his government offer to join the Isla group for revenge against Nina. The next day, Claire is stunned by Kal-El’s resemblance to the former crown prince. She recalls shunning by her community, the destruction of her town, and control by a Saint Aldista church priest. Remembering Karl's parents' deaths and his hatred, she regrets her actions and falls into depression. Navigator Luis de Alarcon invites her to Isla, where she adopts the name Claire. As the class learns dogfighting, Claire and Kal-El excel. During practice, they encounter an invading force from the mythical Sky Clan, which once protected the Holy Spring.
