Oscar and Andre return to their manor while Polignac manipulates Antoinete into securing undeserved wealth and rank, sparking noble resentment. Oscar reports his observations from Arras to his father but is rebuked for breaking rules and told to ignore peasants. Rosalie secures employment at Beltin Dressmakers just before her mother is killed by Polignac's carriage. Dying, her mother reveals Rosalie is not her biological child and that her real mother was Martine Gabrielle. Bernard Chatelet, a news reporter, comforts Rosalie and promises assistance. Vowing revenge, Rosalie travels to Versailles and mistakes Madame Jarjayes for Polignac. Oscar prevents her from stabbing the woman. Learning her story, Oscar takes Rosalie in as a protege to help her enter court and avenge her mother.
