Oscar secretly visits Arras, a village under her family's control, where she encounters the harsh reality of common French citizens. The locals treat her with hostility due to her aristocratic status. Robespierre informs her that the populace blames the Queen's lavish lifestyle for their suffering. When Gilbert, the son of peasant Sugan, falls ill and cannot afford medical care, Oscar intervenes by paying for his treatment at a hospital. This act saves the boy but leaves Oscar deeply disturbed by the widespread misery and the stark class divisions she has observed during her unauthorized journey.
