Andre suffers vision blurring in his right eye due to strain after his left eye went blind. Fersen identifies Oscar as his dance partner, but she flees in tears. They part ways because he cannot reciprocate her feelings. Andre experiences temporary blindness and spends the night with French Guards in Paris to distract himself from his impending loss of sight. Oscar resigns from the Royal Guards to pursue riskier missions, asserting her desire to live as a man. She dismisses Andre, stating she wants independence. Desperate to see her before he goes blind, Andre assaults her by kissing her forcefully and tearing her shirt. He quickly regains his senses, apologizes, and confesses his love, insisting that she will always remain a woman regardless of her choices.
