Hachiman and his sister Komachi Hikkigaya discuss a car accident from his first day of high school. Shizuka reprimands Hachiman regarding his career choice and reminds him to select a three-person group for an upcoming field trip. The Service Club receives a mysterious text that portrays Hayato’s friends Kakeru, Yamato, and Oka as delinquents. Hayato asks the club to stop the message. They deduce that one of the three intends to eliminate another to form a group with Hayato. Yui fails to gather information due to a lack of subtlety. Hachiman observes Hayato’s clique until Saika interrupts. The mystery is solved when Hayato joins their conversation. Hachiman explains the group's dynamic and suggests Hayato leave to allow them to bond. Hayato thanks Hachiman by choosing to group with him and Saika for the trip.
