Following the school festivals, Soubu High School students prepare for a field trip to Kyoto. The Service Club is interrupted by Hayato Hayama and Kakeru Tobe, who ask for help in pursuing Hina Ebina. Hachiman Hikkigaya accepts the request, warning of the risks involved before attempting to identify Kakeru's appealing qualities, though they find little success. Yui Yuigahama intends to use the upcoming trip to advance the plan. Hina interrupts them to comment on changing peer relationships and encourages Hachiman to become more sociable. Upon arriving in Kyoto, Hachiman and Yui make minimal progress in helping Kakeru. Hachiman later reports to Yukino Yukinoshita, but they discover Shizuka Hiratsuka trying to sneak out of the hotel. She persuades them to keep her secret and offers reassurance. The first day concludes with Hachiman escorting Yukino back to the hotel.
