Sayuki and her older brother play in the snowy woods near their home. While building a snowman, he mentions a monster he saw with friends. As they search for materials, her brother disappears while she looks away. She follows his footprints, which are replaced by giant ones. She signals with her hat bells and hears a reply, but finds a glove near a large sled trail. Beckoned by the bells, she discovers scattered clothing and blood in the snow. When she turns for help, her footprints are gone. She signals desperately, then hears a dragging sound approaching through the snow.
