A 17-year-old girl named Emma travels to London during the social season, burdened by her family's expectation to marry for wealth. One evening, she meets an attractive, enigmatic man with dark curly hair and striking blue eyes, and they share her first kiss. Twelve years later, now a widow, Emma visits the Earl of Greyston to discuss her stepdaughter's upcoming marriage. The Earl's younger brother is to be her stepdaughter’s groom, though the Earl himself remains unseen. During her stay, Emma recognizes the man she once kissed in a portrait hanging in the house.
