Ep. 5: Koyomi learns Mayoi's tragic past while Hitagi reveals her ghostly nature and confesses her feelings.
Aired on July 31, 2009

Koyomi discovers that Mayoi is the only child of divorced parents, raised by her father after contact with her mother was severed. Hitagi arrives to apologize, explaining that Mayoi is a ghost visible only to those subconsciously avoiding home, which is why Hitagi could not see her. Oshino’s guidance leads them to Mayoi’s mother’s former residence, now a vacant lot, causing Mayoi to vanish happily upon realizing she is home. Hitagi then confesses her love for Koyomi, intrigued by his altruism. Koyomi accepts her feelings on the condition of total honesty. The episode concludes with Koyomi encountering Mayoi again, who announces her promotion to a wandering spirit and expresses a desire to visit him occasionally.
