With Mr. Leagan absent, the Leagan children frame Candy for stealing Eliza and Neil, whom they chased from the barn. Mrs. Leagan sentences Candy to Mexico in Dorothy's place. Torn between staying for Anthony or preserving her honor, Candy seeks Albert's counsel. Albert receives her message but is driven away by an Ardley overseer.
