Neil tries to poison horses to frame Candy, but a shadow punches him before Candy arrives. Eliza blames Candy for Neil's injury, and Neil agrees to the false accusation. Candy deduces Albert was the attacker and sends him a letter in a bottle down the river. Albert finds her and takes her to the ruined Ardley estate, where he lives with forest animals. Gunmen arrive, forcing Albert to retreat while Candy faces them alone. The gunmen take Candy to the Ardley home, hoping their great-aunt will adopt her to correct her behavior. Eliza ruins the plan by revealing Candy's vagabond past. Disgusted by Eliza and the great-aunt, Anthony decides to embrace a vagabond life, and they ride off together on his horse.
