While traversing canyons, the abusive Mr. Garcia withholds water from Klint and Candy’s rose, forcing the indebted Walters to continue despite baby Jimmy’s dangerous fever. Ignoring Garcia’s refusal to return to town, Candy steals his tilt cart and reaches a doctor who warns that continuing into Mexico will kill the child. To keep the family together, Candy sells her Sweet Candy rose to settle the debt and secure train tickets for the Walters. She then returns to the desert to face the intoxicated Mr. Garcia, explaining that she stayed because she believed he also needed her assistance.
