Candy struggles with aristocratic duties while Eliza tricks Anthony into a horse ride, causing a collision with Tom’s cart. Anthony leaves Eliza to care for her, prompting Tom to accuse him of cowardice at the Leagan and Ardley estates. The two men fight in the forest until exhaustion leads to a friendship. Anthony and Candy help Tom deliver milk, sparking gossip that enrages Great-aunt Elroy. She confines Candy and sends Anthony to Albert’s old mountain mansion. There, Anthony works and trains a pigeon to carry a message to Candy, assuring her he loves his new freedom and situation.
