Candy offers chocolates from Alistear and Archibald to classmates, but Franny rejects them and expresses hatred for girls like Candy. Although Candy sees Franny resembles Merry Jane, she cannot comprehend the animosity. Simultaneously, the assassination of Austrian prince Franz Ferdinand in Serbia triggers Austria's occupation and Great Britain's declaration of war on Austria and Germany, marking the start of World War I. Candy’s summer plans with Patricia and the Cornwell brothers vanish. She reads positive reviews of Terry as a rising star, pushing the war from her mind. Terry performs in Macbeth on Broadway but ignores the acclaim. His thoughts remain on World War I, worrying for Candy’s safety and regretting his absence, realizing his inability to help.
