72
Archibald and Alistear arrive at the hospital in a hot air balloon after their great-aunt Ardley recalled all child relatives to America due to fears of war in Europe. The boys are relieved to escape strict rules. Candy is assigned to care for Catherine, a young pianist virtuoso suffering from mysterious stomach pains that medical tests cannot explain. Despite her condition, Catherine sometimes feels well enough to climb trees with Candy. It is revealed that her mother’s constant pressure to play the piano is the root cause of her illness. Through Catherine’s actions, such as pulling piano strings, and Candy’s stubbornness, the mother eventually realizes how her behavior harms her daughter.
