76

Following permission from Great-aunt Elroy, Alistear and Archibald introduce Candy and Annie to their treehut hideaway. While reminiscing about childhood, the group acknowledges the looming war, noting Patricia’s impending move to Chicago as London’s safety declines. Candy attempts to lighten the mood by focusing on the present. Meanwhile, Eliza objects to the orphans from Pony's Home staying at the Ardley mansion. When her initial plan fails, she enlists her mother, Mrs. Leagan, who orders the girls out since Great-aunt Elroy is too exhausted to decide. The brothers defend the girls, causing Annie distress. Frustrated by the Ardley family politics, Candy asks the brothers to stop the disputes and suggests they sleep in the treehouse, a humble place where love reigns. There, Annie and Candy declare themselves sisters.
