Annie finds her rope ladder gone, but Alistear provides a spare. The Cornwell brothers and the girls enjoy brunch before swimming and viewing Alistear's invention, which Great-aunt Elroy accidentally destroys. Eliza hosts a dinner garden party, but Annie's missing suitcase forces the girls to wear common dresses. Candy discovers the suitcase is in a high tower room and climbs up, only to trigger Neil's trap. She must rappel down dangerously while holding the bag. Meanwhile, French military physician Michael loses interest in the cold Eliza and admires Candy's nursing ambitions. However, an urgent telegram summons Michael back to France for the battle front. He drops Candy off at Saint Joanna Hospital, where she remains determined to become a nurse.
