Terry seeks Candy, learning she works at Saint Joanna Hospital from Annie and the Cornwell brothers. At the hospital, Franny ejects him after discovering Natalie covered Candy’s shift, so Terry waits outside until morning. Meanwhile, Candy looks for Terry’s hotel and meets Susanna, who falsely claims Terry is sleeping to hide her own feelings. Candy returns to the hospital to apologize to Franny and Natalie, missing a letter Terry left at her door. Upon finding it, she rushes to the train station. A coachman drives ahead to intercept the train, allowing Candy to run down hills and jump fences. She catches a final glimpse of Terry on the train as it passes, leaving their reunion incomplete.
