Alistear gives Candy a handmade music box at the station, sharing Archibald’s fear that she will not return to Chicago. The train ride to New York is filled with Candy’s romantic fantasies about reuniting with Terry. Upon arrival, she finds him wearing a shawl to conceal his face. Terry is relieved and happy to see her unchanged, yet he remains troubled by the demands of Susanna’s mother and Susanna’s sorrowful demeanor from his previous visit. Candy senses that something is wrong, but Terry chooses not to reveal the truth about Susanna, unwilling to ruin the joy of their long-awaited meeting.
