Terry escorts Candy to her hotel before his final rehearsal, wishing to perform his best as Romeo for her sake. After dropping her off, he visits Susanna, whose mother praises his daily care for bringing back Susanna’s smile. Susanna expresses happiness for Candy’s luck. The next day, Candy arrives at the theatre with flowers but is stopped by Neil Leagan, who tears her ticket and denies her entry. She sneaks backstage with help from Karen, who provides a signed program, angering Eliza. Inside, Candy overhears spectators discussing Susanna’s condition and Terry’s emotional blackmail into marriage. Realizing the situation lacks genuine love, Candy cannot endure the play and leaves for the hospital to confront Susanna directly.
