Ep. 2: Miaka Meets Tamahome and Becomes the Priestess of Suzaku

Miaka aggressively questions a young man about Yui’s whereabouts, leading to a confrontation with an imperial procession. The man, Tamahome, saves her from guards using a smoke bomb and introduces himself. Miaka briefly returns to her world to check on Yui before being recaptured. After escaping prison using gum to distract a guard, Tamahome explains the Konan empire is ruled by the phoenix Suzaku. Miaka wanders off to eat and meets Hotohori, who appears to be a woman but is revealed to be the emperor. When guards attack Miaka to capture Tamahome, Hotohori intervenes, displaying a symbol on Tamahome’s forehead. In the throne room, Hotohori asks Miaka to become the Priestess of Suzaku to save Konan, granting her wish-fulfilling powers. Miaka accepts the role after considering her personal desires, and the palace bows to her new status.
