Miaka questions Tamahome about his feelings for Nuriko, who overhears and tricks Miaka into a lake. Nuriko admits her love for Hotohori to Tamahome. Miaka returns, and the two women slap each other before becoming friends, with Miaka promising to advocate for Nuriko. Hotohori proposes to Miaka, though he claims to only love the Suzaku priestess, sensing Tamahome and Nuriko listening. The next day, Tamahome and Nuriko ignore Miaka. At the market, Tamahome fails to sell Miaka's bubblegum, forcing her to reveal herself and incite a crowd. They escape a gang, where Tamahome haggles for Miaka's rescue. After defeating the gang, Miaka is angry that Tamahome's intervention prevents him from working locally. She confesses her love, but he rejects her, causing her to collapse in a fever.
